Types of TMD

TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders)

There are three main classes of TMDs:
1. Disorders of the joints, including disc disorders.
2. Disorders of the muscles used for chewing (masticatory muscles).
3. Headaches associated with a TMD.

In most cases, the exact cause is not clear. For many people, symptoms seem to start without obvious reason. Recent research suggests a combination of genes, psychological and life stressors.Because TMDs are more common in women than in men.Research does not support the belief that a bad bite or orthodontic braces cause TMDs.
• Pain or tenderness in the jaw
• Pain in one or both temporomandibular joints.
• Aching pain in and around the ear.
• Having a hard time chewing or pain while chewing.
• Aching facial pain.
• Locking of the joint, making it hard to open or close your mouth
• Headache.
• Neck pain
• Eye pain.
TMJ disorders also can cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew. But if there's no pain or limitation of movement related to your jaw clicking, it's likely that you won't need treatment.

The following symptoms may signal a TMD:
• Pain in the chewing muscles and/or jaw joint (most common symptom).
• Pain that spreads to the face or neck
• Jaw stiffness.
• Limited movement or locking of the jaw.
• Painful clicking, popping, or grating in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth.
• Ringing in the ears, hearing loss, or dizziness
• A change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.

There are no long-term research studies on the safety of open surgery for TMDs or on how well it works to relieve symptoms.

Myofascial Pain and TMD:
Myofascial pain is a frequent type of TMD, particularly affecting the muscles of mastication (chewing).
• Causes: TMD can result from muscle tension, fatigue, or spasm in the muscles around the jaw, which can lead to myofascial pain.
• Factors Contributing to TMD: Misalignment, disease, injury, teeth grinding (bruxism), or clenching can cause the muscles that support the TMJ to become inflamed or strained, leading to pain trigger points.
• Symptoms: Pain around the jaw, ear, and temple, clicking, popping, or grinding noises when moving the jaw, and headaches around the temples are common symptoms of TMD.
• Treatment:Conservative treatment options, including analgesics, muscle relaxation techniques, modifying parafunctional behaviors (teeth clenching and grinding), and oral appliances, are often effective.

Symptoms of TMD or TMJ

Symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
• Pain or tenderness in the jaw.
• Pain in one or both temporomandibular joints.
• Aching pain in and around the ear.
• Having a hard time chewing or pain while chewing.
• Aching facial pain.
• Locking of the joint, making it hard to open or close your mouth.

• Neck pain.

Treatment and success rate

Conservative treatment options, including analgesics, muscle relaxation techniques, modifying parafunctional behaviors (teeth clenching and grinding), and oral appliances, are often effective.

In our clinic treatment of TMD has the success rate of 99% for over 35 years. The age of patients is from 24 to 80 years.
